Stroke at 26: Fashion Designer's Unexpected Health Battle
13 Sep
Summary
- A 26-year-old runner experienced a stroke with no family history.
- A hole in her heart was discovered as the cause, leading to surgery.
- She has since run a marathon and now works to support stroke survivors.
At 26, Niamh Foster, a former competitive swimmer and keen runner, experienced a major ischaemic stroke. She initially mistook her symptoms of headaches and fatigue for work-related stress during London Fashion Week.
Her stroke, preceded by 10 mini-strokes, led to a hospital stay and a significant recovery journey. Doctors later identified a hole in her heart as the cause, for which she underwent surgery seven months later.
Remarkably, eight months post-stroke and weeks after surgery, Foster completed the Manchester Marathon. She now works at The Stroke Association, driven by a renewed sense of purpose after her challenging recovery, which included relearning to walk and talk.
