Stroke Care Reaches North Karnataka Via New Hub-and-Spoke Model
29 Oct
Summary
- A hub-and-spoke model enhances stroke care in northern Karnataka.
- NIMHANS and KMCRI collaborate to provide specialized treatment locally.
- Advanced stroke treatments like thrombectomy are becoming more accessible.

Specialized stroke care is now reaching northern Karnataka through an innovative hub-and-spoke model, pioneered by NIMHANS and the Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Institute (KMCRI) in Hubballi. This initiative aims to reduce the critical need for emergency transfers to distant centers like Bengaluru.
The collaboration ensures that patients in northern Karnataka receive timely assessment and treatment for strokes closer to their homes. KMCRI manages approximately 100 to 120 stroke patients monthly, utilizing teleconsultation and coordinated protocols with NIMHANS.
This model is vital given that nearly 40% of neurological casualty patients at NIMHANS are stroke cases, with about 705 reported monthly. Advanced treatments such as intravenous thrombolysis and endovascular thrombectomy are key to improving patient outcomes.
Recognizing stroke symptoms early is crucial, with the 'BE FAST' acronym (Balance, Eyes, Face, Arms, Speech, Time) serving as a public awareness tool. Prompt action is essential, as every minute counts in stroke treatment to prevent death or long-term disability.
