Strict Parenting Linked to Teen Depression
4 Dec
Summary
- Authoritarian parenting increases teen depression risk.
- Supportive parenting protects against mental health issues.
- Bullying significantly raises chances of depression and anxiety.

Recent research indicates a strong correlation between authoritarian parenting and higher rates of depression among adolescents. This parenting style, which emphasizes strict obedience and harsh discipline, may isolate children in a high-pressure environment, negatively impacting their mental health. In contrast, authoritative parenting, marked by supportive relationships and explained boundaries, appears to shield children from developing depression, anxiety, and stress.
The study, which surveyed 583 students in Nepal, differentiated between parenting approaches. While authoritarian parents are highly demanding with limited flexibility, authoritative parents balance rules with warmth and responsiveness. The findings suggest that the perceived benefits of "tough love" parenting, as championed by some public figures, may be overshadowed by risks to a child's psychological well-being.
Beyond parenting styles, the research identified bullying as a substantial contributor to poor mental health in teenagers, significantly increasing the likelihood of depression and anxiety. While authoritarian parenting was unexpectedly linked to higher self-esteem in this study, the overall evidence points towards supportive and nurturing environments being crucial for fostering healthy adolescent mental development.
