Stem Cell Donor Drive: Film Sparks Urgency
3 Oct
Summary
- Film 'The Perfect Match' urges stem-cell donor registration.
- Documentary highlights need for diverse donors, especially Black Canadians.
- Less than two percent of registered donors are from Black communities.

A documentary screening at MacEwan University's Triffo Theatre has highlighted the urgent need for stem-cell donors. The film, titled 'The Perfect Match,' was shown recently and director Sandro Silva explained his motivation stemmed from a father's difficult search for a donor for his young son, Ezra Marfo.
The hour-long documentary features families and survivors, emphasizing the critical lack of diversity among stem-cell donors. This shortage disproportionately affects Black Canadians, with just two percent of registered donors coming from African, Caribbean, and Black communities. Organizers expressed hope that the film's powerful message will encourage more individuals to register.
Canadian Blood Services, in collaboration with the Ezra Marfo Cancer Foundation, presented the screening. They noted that while family matching is rare, the need for community diversity is paramount. 'The Perfect Match' is slated for streaming on Telus Optik early next year.
