Statins Slash Dementia Risk in Diabetics
4 Sep
Summary
- Statins may lower dementia risk by 15% if taken within a year of diabetes diagnosis.
- Benefits appear stronger for vascular dementia than Alzheimer's.
- Early statin use is encouraged for people with type 2 diabetes.

Initiating statin therapy shortly after a type 2 diabetes diagnosis may offer significant protection against dementia. Research presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress indicates that adults starting statins within one year of their diabetes diagnosis experienced a 15% lower relative risk of developing dementia over a decade.
Even for individuals who delayed statin treatment for one to five years, a 10% lower relative risk was observed. The study tracked over 132,000 Danish patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Experts suggest this benefit is tied to statins' ability to lower "bad" cholesterol, reduce inflammation, and protect blood vessels, thereby preventing vascular damage to the brain.
