Stair Climbing Slashes Death Risk by 39%
13 Aug
Summary
- Climbing stairs reduces cardiovascular death risk by 39%.
- Consistent stair use lowers overall mortality by 24%.
- Just six flights of stairs offer significant health benefits.

Opting for stairs instead of lifts offers a significant reduction in the likelihood of premature death, according to new research. Studies reviewed by academics from the University of East Anglia and Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital found that individuals who consistently climbed stairs had a 39% lower risk of dying from cardiovascular problems.
Furthermore, this routine activity was associated with a 24% reduced chance of death from any cause compared to those who did not use stairs regularly. The findings, published in the American Journal of Cardiovascular Drugs, also suggest a link to fewer cardiovascular issues like strokes, heart failure, and heart attacks.
Researchers emphasize that stair climbing is an easily integrated form of physical activity, ideal for individuals lacking time for conventional exercise. Even climbing just six flights of stairs, approximately 60 steps, can yield health advantages. Cardiovascular disease remains a leading cause of global mortality, but regular physical activity, like taking the stairs, is a largely preventable measure.
