St. Stephen, New Brunswick, experienced a critical incident Sunday night as emergency responders converged on the Lighthouse Lodge shelter due to a cluster of drug overdoses. A total of nine individuals were impacted, necessitating the transport of six to Charlotte County Hospital for treatment.
This event placed a considerable strain on local resources, with five ambulances, nearly the county's total allocation, being deployed. St. Stephen Mayor Steve Backman expressed concern over the diversion of valuable emergency services for a single incident. Neighbourhood Works, the non-profit operating the shelter, confirmed an increase in overdose incidents over the past weekend, several requiring urgent medical attention.
While the specific substance causing the overdoses remains under investigation, officials are actively working to identify the source of a potentially dangerous batch of drugs. Mayor Backman highlighted the growing toxicity of the drug supply and called for enhanced wrap-around services and mental health support. The local hospital managed the influx but questions remain about future capacity.
Health Minister John Dornan acknowledged ongoing discussions regarding increased support for volunteer firefighters responding to overdose calls, recognizing their need for better tools. Neighbourhood Works is urging community members to check on at-risk individuals, encourage safe practices, and to call 911 immediately if an overdose is witnessed.
