Melton Mowbray Births Cease: Unit Closure Confirmed
8 Jan
Summary
- St Mary's Birth Centre in Melton Mowbray will no longer host births.
- Services were temporarily paused last year due to staffing issues.
- Deliveries will be relocated to Leicester General Hospital.

NHS leaders have announced that St. Mary's Birth Centre in Melton Mowbray will not reopen for births following a temporary service halt last year. The University Hospitals of Leicester (UHL) NHS Trust had initially paused deliveries in July due to insufficient staffing to ensure safety.
At the time of the pause, the trust indicated that the future of the unit, where births had decreased to fewer than two per week, was uncertain. This decision follows a period of evaluation regarding the center's viability and service provision.
Now, the UHL NHS Trust, in conjunction with the Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Integrated Care Board, plans to move all birth services to Leicester General Hospital. This facility is located about 15 miles (24km) from the current center.
