Bacteria Forces Pool Closure in St Helier
30 Sep
Summary
- Legionella bacteria discovered in water outlets at Aquasplash.
- Facility temporarily closed for disinfection as a precaution.
- Swimming pools remain unaffected due to separate water systems.
A swimming centre in St Helier, Aquasplash, has announced a temporary closure after routine tests on Friday revealed the presence of Legionella bacteria in multiple water outlets. The bacteria, which can cause Legionnaires' disease if inhaled through water droplets, prompted immediate precautionary measures. Serco Jersey Ltd, the company operating the facility and soon to be part of the government's Active gym initiative, stated that while the public risk is very low, closure is necessary for system disinfection. The main swimming pools themselves are not affected, operating on a separate, independently treated water system.
