Sri Lanka Dengue Crisis: Armed Forces Join Fight

Sri Lanka is experiencing its most severe dengue outbreak in almost a decade, with over 76,000 infections and 53 deaths reported since the beginning of the year. The crisis is straining public health services and hospitals, prompting the deployment of the island's armed forces to aid in controlling the disease's spread. Efforts are multifaceted, involving air force drones identifying potential mosquito breeding sites on rooftops and military and police personnel assisting in home inspections.

The current numbers are approaching those of a 2017 outbreak, which saw over 100,000 cases. Hospitals have been forced to expand capacity and increase staff working hours to manage the surge. A more virulent strain of the virus, DENV-2, is linked to approximately 75% of the cases, contributing to their severity. Health officials anticipate that cases may decrease as monsoon rains weaken in August but warn of a potential increase with the return of rainfall in November.

In response, authorities are intensifying cleanup operations, targeting homes, building sites, and schools to eliminate mosquito habitats. Thousands of breeding sites have been cleared, and fines have been issued for premises found to harbor mosquitoes. Doctors are also advising patients with mild symptoms to recover at home to reduce pressure on medical facilities. The nation is also exploring the possibility of introducing a dengue vaccine, though experts note potential limitations due to the virus's complexity and the circulation of multiple strains.
