American Covid Variant Prompts Spring Vaccine Rollout
30 Oct
Summary
- Spring 2027 vaccinations will be offered to high-risk individuals.
- The XFG variant, nicknamed 'American Covid,' is driving rising cases.
- Vaccines are expected to remain effective against the new variant.

As Covid-19 cases climb, driven by the XFG variant known as 'American Covid,' the UK government has announced a spring 2027 vaccination campaign. This initiative targets older adults and those who are immunosuppressed, identified as being at the highest risk from severe outcomes of the virus. The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) has advised this targeted approach, which the government has accepted.
The XFG variant, first identified in January 2025, is a hybrid of the LF.7 and LP.8.1.2 strains. It is now the most prevalent strain in North America and has spread globally, including to the UK. Symptoms are generally consistent with previous variants, often starting with a sore throat, followed by cough, fever, and fatigue.
Health officials emphasize that existing Covid-19 vaccines are anticipated to remain effective against the 'American Covid' strain. They strongly encourage all eligible individuals to receive their autumn booster and children to get their nasal spray flu vaccine. Continuous monitoring of respiratory viruses throughout winter is planned.
