- Patient regained independent walking and fine motor skills post-rehab.
A 65-year-old man's vacation in Shimla took a critical turn when a fall resulted in acute spinal injury and subsequent quadriparesis. The patient, who had a history of untreated chronic neck pain, was brought to Chennai for treatment.
Diagnostic imaging revealed cervical ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament, a rare progressive condition where a spinal ligament calcifies, constricting the spinal canal and pressing on the spinal cord.
Consultant spine surgeon Dr. Ganesh Kumar and his team performed a complex cervical spine procedure. This involved posterior decompression to alleviate pressure on the spinal cord and screw fixation for stabilization, utilizing intraoperative neuromonitoring.
Following the successful surgery, the patient underwent a rigorous rehabilitation program. He has now made a significant recovery, regaining his ability to walk independently and fine motor skills, highlighting the success of the multidisciplinary approach.
