Sir Gareth Southgate recently inaugurated the extensive £21.9 million redevelopment of Martin House children's hospice in Boston Spa, West Yorkshire. This major project, known as "The Build," was realized through public donations and aims to secure the future of children's palliative care across West, North, and East Yorkshire. The newly expanded and refurbished hospice now features a dedicated children's wing, a hydrotherapy pool, a wellbeing suite, and an education centre, enhancing the care provided to young people with life-shortening conditions.
The hospice, established in 1987, provides vital support to over 550 children and their families annually. Caroline and Michael Lambert, whose daughter Evelyn received care at Martin House before her passing in 2021, have been instrumental in fundraising, contributing over £125,000. Their efforts, including challenging endurance events, are driven by a desire to honor Evelyn's memory and to give back to the hospice that offered their family invaluable support during difficult times.
Sir Gareth Southgate, an ambassador for the charity, praised the hospice's "personal, tailored care" that "genuinely transforms the lives of young people." The redevelopment ensures that Martin House can continue to offer a "modern, family-focused hospice that matches the extraordinary quality of care" its teams provide, safeguarding specialized palliative care training and family support for years to come.
