SC Measles Cases Skyrocket to 973
21 Feb
Summary
- Measles cases in South Carolina reached 973 as of Friday.
- The outbreak, centered in the northwest, began in October.
- A vast majority, 906 cases, involved unvaccinated individuals.

As of Friday, February 20, 2026, South Carolina has recorded a staggering 973 measles cases, with 11 new infections reported since Tuesday. This significant outbreak, which originated in October, has been primarily concentrated in the northwestern region of the state, encompassing areas like Greenville and Spartanburg.
While state health officials observe a recent decline in daily case counts, they caution that the outbreak is far from over and could continue for weeks or months. This persistence is attributed to lagging vaccine uptake. Of the total infected, a substantial 906 individuals were unvaccinated, while 20 were partially vaccinated, 26 fully vaccinated, and 21 had an unknown vaccination status.
Currently, 105 individuals are under quarantine, with the latest end date for quarantine set for March 15. Seven people are in isolation. The outbreak will officially be declared over only after 42 consecutive days—equivalent to two full incubation periods—following the last confirmed case. Nationally, the U.S. has reported 982 confirmed measles cases in 2026 as of February 19.
