29 Apr
Summary
- Somerset Cares Alliance faces criticism over safeguarding practices.
- CEO highlights risks of unregulated homecare when issues arise.
- Government plans new National Safeguarding Board and review.

Concerns have been raised regarding the safeguarding measures employed by the Somerset Cares Alliance, a network of community projects offering home care services. While Somerset Council intends to increase its investment in the program, the Homecare Association has voiced significant worries about safety protocols.
Dr. Jane Townson OBE, CEO of the Homecare Association, emphasized that individuals often realize the distinction between regulated and unregulated homecare only after a problem occurs. She noted that while choice is important, informed choice is paramount, and many people assume all homecare providers undergo proper checks and training.
David Patterson, co-founder of the Somerset Cares Alliance, defended the organization, stating that all prospective carers undergo rigorous interviews, DBS and safeguarding checks, and essential training. He added that the alliance can typically provide services for a wide range of needs, from companionship to more involved care, based on the carer's experience.
A spokesperson for Somerset Council commented that the rise of community groups signifies a positive shift towards community empowerment rather than council failure, believing local community help is often the most effective. Additionally, a government spokesperson announced that over £4.6 billion in funding is being directed towards adult social care, and a new National Safeguarding Board will be established following recommendations to review existing rules.
