Social Media Harms Kids: New Study Reveals Risks
20 Mar
Summary
- Social media use is linked to increased depression and self-harm in children.
- Video games show mixed results, improving attention but increasing aggression.
- Parents must guide children toward healthy digital media relationships.
A comprehensive review of 153 studies encompassing nearly 19,000 children aged 2 to 19 indicates that social media use significantly harms child development and health. The research, published in JAMA Pediatrics, found consistent adverse associations between social media and mental well-being.
These digital platforms are linked to increased rates of depression, self-harm, substance use, and behavioral issues. The association with depression was most pronounced in 12- to 15-year-olds.
Video gaming presented a more complex picture, associated with aggression and externalizing behaviors, but also with modestly enhanced attention and executive functions. The review emphasizes that the risks posed by social media are comparable to other lifestyle factors like poor diet.
Experts stress the critical role of parents in educating children about healthy digital media habits. They advise against simply removing devices as punishment, advocating instead for open communication and guidance to ensure a balanced relationship with technology.
