A mother in northern Italy is leading a lawsuit against Meta and TikTok, alleging their platforms contributed to her 12-year-old daughter's suicide. Irene Roggero Ugues stated her daughter, Rossella, was inundated with self-harm content via social media algorithms, profoundly altering her behavior before her death in 2024. The family discovered Rossella had a secret Instagram account filled with depressive material, which social media algorithms continuously reinforced.

This legal action represents the first collective challenge in Italy against social media companies over their algorithms. The families involved seek enhanced restrictions on minors' online access and increased awareness of potential dangers. Both Meta and TikTok deny their services are inherently harmful, asserting they implement safeguards to protect young users and remove harmful material.
