Sleep Schedule Chaos Tied to Heart Danger
7 Apr
Summary
- Inconsistent sleep schedules and less than 8 hours sleep increase cardiovascular event risk.
- Irregular bedtime patterns nearly double the risk of heart attack and stroke.
- Sleep consistency is highlighted as a crucial factor for public health and heart well-being.

Adults who do not maintain a consistent sleep schedule and sleep less than 8 hours per night have a significantly increased risk of major cardiovascular events (MACE), according to a recent study. The research highlights that irregular bedtimes, combined with inadequate sleep duration, nearly doubled the risk of heart attack and stroke over a 10-year period.
This study, involving over 3,200 adults, utilized wrist activity monitors to track sleep patterns. It found that sleep midpoint irregularity also correlated with higher cardiovascular risk, suggesting that disruptions to the body's circadian rhythm can negatively impact blood pressure and stress hormone regulation.
Experts stress the clinical significance of these findings, noting that a two-fold increase in MACE risk is substantial. They advocate for sleep consistency to be a key focus in public health strategies to help prevent cardiovascular disease. The research underscores that sleep health involves more than just total sleep hours.
