Sindh Launches Breastfeeding Week, Bolstering Child Health

The Sindh government officially commenced World Breastfeeding Week on August 1, 2026, with a dedicated focus on improving infant and maternal health. The province is intensifying efforts to enforce the Sindh Protection and Promotion of Breast-feeding and Young Child Nutrition Act, which strictly prohibits the advertising and marketing of infant formula and other breast milk substitutes for children up to three years old.

Furthermore, the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative is being expanded across tertiary, district, and regional hospitals. This expansion aims to create supportive environments where mothers are encouraged to begin breastfeeding immediately after birth, ensuring skin-to-skin contact and minimizing unnecessary formula feeding. Over 3,000 healthcare providers have already received training in lactation management and counselling.

This campaign aligns with the global theme, "Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life." UNICEF has pledged support for advocacy and awareness activities throughout August, emphasizing breastfeeding as a critical component of child survival, nutrition, and development. The collective goal is to foster an environment that supports successful breastfeeding practices for all children in Pakistan.
