Could These 5 Signs Mean Too Much Sugar?
3 Oct
Summary
- Poor sleep, thirst, cravings, itching, and aches may signal high sugar.
- Excessive thirst and frequent urination are strong indicators of high blood sugar.
- Blood tests are essential to confirm high blood sugar; symptoms alone are insufficient.
Health and wellness educator Glucosegurlrami recently identified five subtle symptoms that could indicate excessive sugar in the body. These include poor sleep quality, persistent thirst and frequent urination, uncontrollable sugar cravings, general itching, and body aches or nerve pain. While some of these signs can correlate with high blood sugar, medical professionals caution that they are not definitive indicators of diabetes.
Excessive thirst and frequent urination are the most closely associated symptoms with high blood glucose levels. This occurs as the kidneys attempt to excrete excess sugar, leading to increased fluid loss and dehydration. Itchy skin can also be a manifestation, often due to dehydration or recurrent fungal infections common with elevated sugar. However, itching can stem from numerous other causes.
Sugar cravings and general body aches are less direct indicators, potentially linked to diet, lifestyle, or other health conditions. Similarly, poor sleep is not a specific symptom of high blood sugar and can even impair insulin sensitivity. Persistent nerve pain, however, can develop over time due to nerve damage from prolonged high blood glucose.
Experts stress that symptoms alone are insufficient for diagnosing high blood sugar; a blood test is crucial. If excessive thirst, frequent urination, unusual tiredness, blurred vision, or unexplained weight loss occur together or persist, seeking a blood sugar test is advisable. Routine screening is also recommended for individuals with risk factors, as diabetes can sometimes present with minimal symptoms.
