Silent Killers: Young Indians Dying of Heart Attacks
11 Jul
Summary
- Many heart attacks are silent, with no prior chest pain symptoms.
- Diabetes can mask heart attack symptoms, leading to delayed diagnosis.
- Physical fitness alone doesn't rule out underlying heart disease.

Disturbing incidents of young, seemingly healthy individuals collapsing from heart attacks have become increasingly common in India. Renowned cardiac surgeon Dr. Devi Shetty explained that many heart attacks are not sudden but rather silent, with nearly 50 percent of patients having arterial blockages without any prior symptoms, especially diabetics.
Dr. Shetty highlighted that diabetes can reduce pain sensation, meaning classic warning signs like crushing chest pain may be absent. Instead, individuals might experience unusual tiredness, nausea, or mild discomfort, which can be easily overlooked. This underscores the importance of regular heart screenings, particularly for those with diabetes.
While awareness of heart attacks has increased, leading to more reporting, experts also note a persistent high burden of cardiovascular disease in India. Widespread risk factors like diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol contribute to this. Dr. Shetty advocates for basic evaluations, including knowing one's blood pressure and cholesterol levels, to detect underlying heart disease before symptoms appear.
Furthermore, physical fitness alone is not a guarantee against heart disease. Even elite athletes undergo extensive screening, as serious heart conditions can remain undetected. Young people planning to participate in intense sports should undergo proper medical evaluations to identify potential risks.
