Microbiologist Exposes Shocking Bacterial Growth in Gym Showers
14 Nov
Summary
- Microbiologist tests gym shower floor, finds alarming bacterial growth
- Warns that sweat and warm, wet conditions breed germs in gyms
- Experts say gyms harbor bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella

On November 14, 2025, a microbiologist's disturbing findings about the bacterial growth in gym shower floors went viral, sparking concerns about hygiene and health risks for gym-goers.
Nick Aicher, a Chicago-based senior quality control analyst, recently conducted an experiment to test the bacteria levels on a gym shower floor. In a video that has garnered nearly 14,000 views, Aicher swabbed the floor and incubated the sample, only to be confronted by a thick presence of bacterial growth.
Aicher's findings align with warnings from experts about the germ-rich environments in gyms. Dr. Primrose Freestone, a senior lecturer in Clinical Microbiology at the University of Leicester, explains that "anywhere there's sweat, there are probably germs." The most common disease-causing bacteria found in gyms is Staphylococcus aureus, which can trigger MRSA, a serious and potentially life-threatening infection.
