Summary
- Shigellosis outbreak in Kozhikode district linked to contaminated water sources.
- E. coli bacteria detected in some wells, raising contamination concerns.
- Local authorities are superchlorinating water and conducting hygiene awareness.

A recent shigellosis outbreak in Kozhikode district, Kerala, has tragically claimed the life of a three-and-a-half-year-old girl. Health authorities have confirmed 13 positive cases of the intestinal infection within the Peruvayal grama panchayat. Investigations revealed the presence of E. coli bacteria in some local wells, strongly suggesting that contaminated water sources are the main driver of the frequent water-borne diseases.
Concerns are escalating due to past encroachments on 18 rivulets feeding the Mampuzha river, impacting water flow and potentially harboring pathogens. In response, local authorities have initiated superchlorination of water in three affected wards and are conducting widespread awareness sessions on critical hand hygiene practices. Health workers have visited numerous houses to chlorinate water sources, and the anganwadi attended by the deceased child has been temporarily closed.
