Shanghai has introduced its inaugural "museum prescription" program, an innovative initiative focused on delivering drug-free mental healing via science and cultural venues. Launched on June 15, the program is a joint effort between the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum (SSTM) and the Shanghai Mental Health Center (SMHC).
This program offers a unique form of social prescription, distinct from traditional clinical drug treatments. Eligible individuals can receive a "museum prescription" following an assessment. These prescriptions are available through medical institutions within the city's mental health network and at community-level public service centers. Holders of these prescriptions are granted complimentary access to designated museum spaces and can participate in specialized healing activities.
Dr. Qiao Ying, chief physician at SMHC, emphasized the program's goal of creating accessible scenarios to weave mental health services into everyday life. This approach aims to reduce the pressure associated with seeking formal medical treatment, making mental well-being support more approachable for residents.
