Severe Asthma Patients Face Hidden Health Crises
20 May
Summary
- Most severe asthma patients have other undetected health conditions.
- Nearly all patients studied had at least one, most had three-plus issues.
- New research identifies distinct symptom profiles in difficult asthma cases.

Clinicians are warning that individuals with severe asthma frequently experience co-occurring health conditions that may go undetected. These patients, whose symptoms like coughing and shortness of breath are not well-controlled by standard medications, often suffer from issues such as osteoporosis, eczema, and chronic sinusitis.
A study analyzing data from 2,700 patients across 11 European countries indicated that almost all participants had at least one additional significant health problem, with most having three or more. The research identified three distinct symptom profiles consistently appearing across different patient groups.
These profiles linked severe asthma control, attack frequency, and treatment needs. Notable patterns included a high incidence of osteoporosis combined with weight gain from steroid treatments, and eczema alongside hay fever. Doctors emphasize that a deeper understanding of these patterns is vital for improving care beyond just managing asthma symptoms.
Obesity, particularly steroid-induced weight gain, merits specific attention. The findings highlight the need to reduce reliance on oral steroids in managing severe asthma, suggesting a path toward more personalized and effective patient care.
