Scotland Bans Botched Beauty Treatments for Minors

Scotland's Parliament has unanimously backed new legislation aimed at enhancing safety in the cosmetic procedures industry. The Non-surgical Procedures and Functions of Medical Reviewers (Scotland) Bill introduces significant restrictions, including a ban on treatments for individuals under 18. Approved premises, such as health clinics and pharmacies, will be mandated for procedures like botox and non-surgical Brazilian butt lifts.

This bill responds to growing concerns over unregulated cosmetic treatments causing harm, with reports indicating complications from treatments like botox and dermal fillers. The legislation proposes substantial penalties, including fines up to £10,000, for performing treatments on minors or outside permitted locations. The government also gains power to set critical hygiene, qualification, and safety standards for procedures including chemical peels and microneedling.

While supported by many MSPs as a vital step for patient safety, some concerns have been raised about potential unintended consequences for responsible practitioners.
