Summary
- Scarborough Dialysis Unit received an inadequate rating from the CQC.
- Inspectors found patients experienced treatment and disconnection delays.
- Concerns included cleanliness, staff shortages, and medication safety.
The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has rated the Scarborough NHS Dialysis Unit as inadequate, leading to its placement in special measures. An inspection in April revealed significant concerns regarding patient safety and care quality.
The unit, operated by Fresenius Medical Care Renal Services Limited, was found to be inadequate in safe, effective, and well-led categories. Inspectors noted instances of delayed dialysis treatments and disconnections, which patients had repeatedly reported without resolution.
Further issues included problems with cleanliness, such as broken flooring and contamination risks. The CQC also identified shortages of qualified staff, inadequate training records, and unsafe medication practices.
Leaders were found to have not implemented lessons learned from incidents. The CQC stated the unit would remain under close monitoring to ensure necessary improvements are made to safeguard patients.
