Scarborough Care Home Plan Sparks Outcry
27 Aug
Summary
- Residents fear impact on local facilities and environment.
- Proposed 60-bed care home threatens child road safety.
- Council plans care hubs as part of a £30m investment.
Plans for a new 60-bed care home in Scarborough's Eastfield estate have drawn sharp criticism from local residents. North Yorkshire Council's proposal for the three-storey facility on Pelton Wheel Lane has raised concerns regarding its potential impact on local infrastructure and the environment.
Residents voiced fears that the development would severely threaten child road safety and lead to the destruction of the estate's only green space. The council, however, states the facility is crucial for alleviating care capacity shortfalls and facilitating hospital discharges.
The £30 million plan includes intermediate care, short-term care, and dementia care provisions, aiming to address a significant identified shortfall in intermediate care capacity across the county. This initiative seeks to reduce reliance on costly independent sector placements.
Despite the council's rationale, residents have also questioned the viability of the site and pointed to previously promised, but undelivered, local facilities. The proposals are currently open for public representation.
