Scabies Outbreak: UK Schools on Alert
13 Mar
Summary
- Scabies cases see significant rise since 2023.
- Intense itching, especially at night, is a key symptom.
- Schools share information to raise awareness and vigilance.

An increase in scabies cases is concerning health officials across the UK. A 2024 report from the UK Health Security Agency indicated a significant surge in diagnoses, with a 44% increase observed between 2023 and 2024. This contrasts sharply with the relatively stable 1,500 annual cases reported in the years preceding the COVID-19 pandemic.
Schools are taking precautionary measures as awareness of scabies grows. One school has informed Public Health England about identified cases, who advised there's no indication of a broader issue within the school itself. Information regarding symptoms is being shared with staff and parents to ensure everyone remains vigilant.
The UK Health Security Agency notes that while scabies is uncomfortable, it is not a notifiable infection, meaning not all cases are officially recorded. They offer support and advice to schools when needed, alongside local authority public health colleagues.
Symptoms of scabies, as per the NHS, primarily involve intense itching, most noticeable at night, and the appearance of a raised rash or spots, which may look red. This is the second school in the county to report cases within three weeks, following a similar situation at Newlyn School last month.
