Scabies Outbreak Shuts Welsh Hospital Ward
19 Oct
Summary
- A hospital ward in west Wales closed due to a scabies outbreak.
- Scabies is a parasitic infection causing itchy rashes.
- Health board restricts visiting to contain the spread.

The Bryngolau Ward at Prince Philip Hospital in Carmarthenshire, west Wales, has been closed to visitors due to an outbreak of scabies. This parasitic Victorian disease, characterized by an intensely itchy and blotchy red rash, spreads rapidly through skin-to-skin contact. The outbreak follows similar restrictions recently lifted on two other wards at the same hospital.
Hywel Dda University Health Board confirmed the visiting restrictions, emphasizing that the situation is under regular review and the risk to the public remains low. Patients recently discharged from the affected ward will be contacted directly. The health board is implementing additional measures to curb the infection's spread.
Scabies is caused by tiny mites burrowing under the skin. While symptoms can take up to eight weeks to appear, treatment involves high-temperature washing of bedding and clothing and avoiding close contact. Pharmacists can provide creams to alleviate symptoms, and individuals can return to work or school once treatment begins.
