HIV Blood Scandal: Six Children Infected in Satna
19 Dec
Summary
- Six children contracted HIV through infected blood at a Satna hospital.
- Blood bank in-charge and two technicians were suspended following the incident.
- The infections occurred between January and May this year.

Six children in Satna district, Madhya Pradesh, have contracted HIV after receiving infected blood transfusions at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Government Hospital. The alarming incidents, involving children suffering from thalassemia, occurred between January and May of this year. Investigations revealed that the blood provided was HIV-positive, leading to the infection of the young patients and, tragically, the parents of one child.
In the wake of these revelations, the Madhya Pradesh government has taken swift action. The blood bank in-charge, Dr. Devendra Patel, along with lab technicians Ram Bhai Tripathi and Nandlal Pandey, have been suspended. This disciplinary measure is based on a preliminary investigation report submitted by a committee formed by the State's Public Health and Family Welfare Department on December 16.
Further accountability measures are in place, with former civil surgeon Manoj Shukla receiving a show-cause notice and a warning of severe departmental action if his explanation is not satisfactory. All six children are presently receiving care under established HIV protocols, highlighting the ongoing nature of their treatment and recovery.
