19 Dec
Summary
- Old mobile mammogram unit to retire after 23 years of service.
- New unit will serve 42 rural and northern communities starting January.
- Screening eligibility expanded, aiding the new unit's reach.
Saskatchewan's government is retiring a mobile mammogram unit that has served women since 2002. A new, upgraded replacement was unveiled recently in Saskatoon. This new unit is set to begin servicing 42 rural and northern communities starting in January, operating as part of the BreastCheck screening program.
This initiative aims to improve early cancer detection rates, as approximately one-third of provincial breast screenings are currently conducted on mobile units. Officials anticipate that around 14,000 women will be screened in 2026 with the new bus, which offers improved efficiency and lower radiation dosage, ensuring a standard of care comparable to urban centers.
Further enhancing accessibility, breast screening without a doctor's referral has been extended to women aged 45 and older, with plans to include all women 40 and older by the end of July 2026. A second mammography bus is planned for deployment in late 2026.
