Sarcopenia, the age-related decline in muscle mass and strength, is affecting more than one in 10 adults in rural areas of the Telugu states. This progressive condition was found in 11.3% of participants in a study with a mean age of 35.5 years, highlighting its presence well before old age.

The study, analyzing data from the Andhra Pradesh Children and Parents Study, examined 13 chronic conditions. Anaemia was the most common (24.7%), followed by hypertension (19.9%), sarcopenia (11.3%), and diabetes (4.6%).

Multimorbidity, defined as having two or more chronic conditions, affected 14.2% of participants. This burden increased significantly with age, but younger and middle-aged adults also experienced substantial rates, with 14.9% of those aged 30-44 having multiple conditions.

Behavioral risk factors like tobacco consumption, physical inactivity, and poor sleep were linked to a higher incidence of multimorbidity. Those who were physically inactive had 66% higher odds, and those with poor sleep had 86% higher odds.

Researchers emphasize that while associations are identified, the cross-sectional nature of the study means cause and effect cannot be definitively established. Interventions promoting physical activity, reducing tobacco use, and addressing sleep issues could help alleviate the burden of chronic conditions.
