Sandwell Maternity Unit Accused of Racism, Bullying

An investigation into Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust's maternity services has uncovered serious concerns. Staff reported a workplace culture where speaking up felt unsafe, contributing to low morale and instances of bullying. Investigators even witnessed a racist incident among staff during their evidence-gathering visit.

Families and staff detailed how language used within the service sometimes implied patients were 'outsiders' or to blame for their outcomes due to cultural beliefs or language barriers. Patients described feeling judged and ignored, with some suggesting they had to exaggerate pain to be taken seriously. Instances where concerns were dismissed as 'normal' led to later complications.

The report highlighted that some clinicians had left the organization due to perceived unsafe care, citing being "overloaded" and "suffocated by the sheer volume." While the new Midland Metropolitan University Hospital is modern, the investigation found improved facilities had not necessarily translated to better care. The trust has since appointed new leadership and adopted a zero-tolerance approach to discrimination.
