TAVI Patients May Go Home Day Of Surgery
23 Feb
Summary
- Some heart valve replacement patients can leave hospital same day.
- Same-day discharge patients had similar outcomes to those who stayed.
- Careful selection allows about 1 in 5 TAVI patients to go home early.
Advancements in transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) may soon allow some patients to leave the hospital on the same day they receive the procedure. A recent study presented at an European Society of Cardiology meeting indicates that same-day discharge is a safe option for a carefully selected group of patients.
The research reviewed 790 TAVI patients, with 35% initially deemed eligible for same-day discharge. Of these, 57% were successfully discharged on the procedure day, while others were kept hospitalized due to various health concerns like heart rhythm abnormalities. The average age of same-day discharge patients was 80.
Outcomes for same-day discharge patients were comparable to those who stayed longer, with similar death rates and readmission rates within 30 days. This approach can reduce risks associated with hospitalization, such as infection or delirium, and conserve healthcare resources. Further studies are recommended to explore same-day discharge after TAVI procedures.
