30 Apr
Summary
- Salmonella outbreak linked to restaurant now has 9 hospitalizations.
- Investigation found contaminated cheese but suspects cross-contamination.
- Restaurant reopened after thorough cleaning and staff re-education.
A significant salmonella outbreak has affected the Piper Arms restaurant in Stoney Creek, resulting in nine hospitalizations and 29 confirmed cases, with an additional 57 probable cases also linked.
Hamilton Public Health's investigation identified contaminated cheese but concluded that cross-contamination within the kitchen was the likely source, rather than a single food item. Inspectors initially closed the restaurant on April 13.
Following a comprehensive cleaning and targeted food handler education focusing on safety practices, the establishment was permitted to reopen on Monday. The restaurant received a fine of $705 for three infractions discovered during the investigation.
Public health will conduct follow-up inspections to ensure ongoing compliance with food safety standards. Salmonella enteritidis infection symptoms include diarrhea, fever, vomiting, and abdominal cramps, typically appearing 6 to 48 hours after exposure.
