Sanitary Pad Safety Under Scrutiny in South Africa
2 Mar
Summary
- South Africa investigates nine sanitary pad suppliers for harmful chemicals.
- University study detected endocrine-disrupting chemicals in pads and liners.
- Probe could lead to major product recalls, officials stated.

South Africa's National Consumer Commission has initiated an investigation into nine suppliers of sanitary pads due to concerns over chemicals found in their products. This probe was prompted by a recent study from the University of the Free State which identified endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in 16 brands of sanitary pads and eight types of pantyliners available in the country.
The investigation is expected to last at least six months, during which suppliers must provide recent test results. The inquiry focuses on companies distributing multiple products, including major international brands, and could potentially lead to the recall of specific product batches. EDCs, such as phthalates, bisphenols, and parabens, are known to interfere with the hormonal system.
While the research does not confirm immediate health harm, scientists expressed concern about cumulative exposure over a woman's reproductive life. The findings have spurred calls for accountability from manufacturers and have been welcomed by parliamentary members prioritizing public health. The Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities will collaborate with other bodies to improve regulatory frameworks for menstrual health products.
