Rwanda FDA Cracks Down on Illicit Alcohol Production

Effective immediately, the Rwanda Food and Drugs Authority (Rwanda FDA) has mandated the closure of eight alcoholic beverage manufacturers. All relevant manufacturing licenses have been revoked, and a nationwide recall of products has been ordered to address significant public health concerns. These stringent measures were implemented following recent regulatory inspections and compliance assessments.

The affected facilities include Ingufu Gin Ltd, NBG Ltd, SKY Drop Industries Ltd, Africana Buffalo Ltd, NOPA Company Ltd, Roots Investment Group Ltd, Rugali Agro-processing Company, and Zhonglu Industrial Liability Company Ltd. The recall encompasses a wide array of products such as gins, vodkas, whiskies, rum, brandy, liqueurs, and potable spirits.

Manufacturers are required to commence a full product recall within three working days and submit reports to the Rwanda FDA. Distributors and retailers must cease sales and return remaining stock. Consumers are urged to stop consuming the recalled beverages immediately. The Rwanda FDA indicated that enforcement actions are ongoing, with potential for more facilities to be affected.

This decisive action follows the revocation of all ethanol import licenses the previous day. Authorities are intensifying efforts to combat the production and distribution of unsafe alcoholic drinks and to tackle alcohol abuse, particularly among younger populations.
