ER Security Tightens: One Bag, One Visitor Rule Now Active
29 Apr
Summary
- Patients and visitors are now limited to one bag each in the ER.
- Security will search all bags for prohibited items.
- Policy changes follow a recent stabbing incident in the ER.
The Royal Alexandra Hospital has introduced a new policy strictly limiting visitors in its emergency room. Effective immediately, patients and any individual accompanying them will only be permitted to bring a single bag into the ER. This change is a direct response to a serious incident that occurred on April 3rd, when a 42-year-old man was stabbed, sustaining life-threatening injuries.
Security officers will now conduct thorough searches of all allowed bags to ensure no weapons or prohibited items are brought into the facility. While exceptions for medical devices and child-care items will be made, the overall aim is to bolster safety and create a more manageable environment within the busy emergency department. Alberta Health Services also noted that reducing the number of visitors can help minimize noise and improve space efficiency.
