6 Dec
Summary
- Rooibos tea, from South Africa, strengthens gut lining.
- It reduces inflammation and protects gut cells from damage.
- Both fermented and unfermented rooibos offer distinct gut benefits.

Rooibos, a herbal tea indigenous to South Africa's Cederberg region, is gaining attention for its potential to improve gut health. Traditionally consumed by the Khoisan people, this caffeine-free drink has been scientifically recognized for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Recent laboratory studies, using pig intestinal cells that closely mimic human gut responses, have explored how different rooibos extracts impact gut health.
The research focused on the gut barrier, a critical defense layer that prevents harmful substances from entering the bloodstream. Findings reveal that rooibos extracts enhance the integrity of this barrier by positively affecting cellular proteins. This fortification, combined with reduced inflammation, is vital for protecting the gut from damage and preventing conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
Both fermented and unfermented rooibos teas, derived from the Aspalathus linearis plant, demonstrated unique benefits. Fermented rooibos showed an ability to decrease inflammation, while unfermented rooibos proved effective in maintaining a healthy gut lining. While further human trials are needed, these results suggest rooibos could become a valuable component in dietary supplements or functional foods aimed at digestive wellness.
