Rocket Doctor Treats Over 360,000 Patients as Ontario Faces Healthcare Crisis
7 Aug
Summary
- 1 in 5 Ontario hospitals experienced ER closures in 2024
- 2.5 million Ontarians lacked a family doctor as of 2023
- Rocket Doctor saw 63% increase in patient visits from 2023 to 2024

Ontario's healthcare system has been under immense pressure in recent years, and 2024 marked the worst year on record for the province. According to a CBC analysis, one in five hospitals with an emergency room or urgent care center experienced unplanned shutdowns, predominantly in rural areas. This crisis has left many communities without reliable access to emergency care.
At the same time, Ontario's family physician workforce is showing signs of strain, with nearly 15% of patients now attached to doctors aged 65 or older, many nearing retirement. Coupled with a decline in younger physicians entering comprehensive practice, access to family medicine continues to erode, leaving 2.5 million Ontarians without a family doctor by 2023.
In the face of these mounting challenges, Rocket Doctor has stepped up to fill the gap. Since its Ontario launch in 2020, physicians using Rocket Doctor have treated more than 360,000 patients, reflecting the platform's growing reach and the critical demand for innovative care solutions across the province. In 2024, Rocket Doctor-affiliated physicians provided care for 62,648 patients, a sharp rise from 38,378 in 2023, representing a 63% year-over-year increase. The platform's growth has been especially impactful in smaller communities, with over 102,000 patients from towns with fewer than 30,000 residents receiving care through Rocket Doctor to date.
