3 Oct
Summary
- Delhi NCR leads India in robotic surgery system installations.
- Robotic procedures in Delhi NCR grew nearly five-fold since 2021.
- India is advancing towards telesurgery, connecting distant hospitals.
New Delhi is rapidly establishing itself as a significant hub for robotic surgery. Experts at the Society of Robotic Surgery India 2026 conference highlighted Delhi NCR's dominance in robotic system installations and the volume of procedures performed.
Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda stated India is at an 'exciting juncture' in healthcare innovation, emphasizing its potential to lead in surgical robotics. Delhi NCR hosts 39 hospitals with robotic systems, with 11 facilities operating multiple units. This concentration underscores the region's advanced capabilities.
The adoption of robotic surgery has been swift, with procedures in Delhi NCR climbing from 2,257 in 2021 to 10,937 in 2025. This growth spans various specialties, including general surgery, urology, and gynecology.
Nationally, robotic-assisted procedures increased from 8,912 in 2021 to 44,857 in 2025, reflecting a broader national expansion. India is also exploring telesurgery, with a recent remote procedure successfully conducted over 1,600 km, demonstrating the potential for expanded access to specialized surgical care.
Demonstrations of cross-border telesurgery, connecting India with China, showcase further possibilities for remote training and expertise sharing, particularly for underserved areas. These advancements are supported by international recommendations focusing on connectivity, cybersecurity, and training.
