Robotic Surgery Saves Kidney Function in Complex Case
19 Aug
Summary
- City's first robotic Boari flap reconstruction performed successfully.
- Complex ureteric stricture treated, restoring normal kidney function.
- Minimally invasive robotic surgery led to faster patient recovery.

In a significant medical advancement, the Asian Institute of Nephrology & Urology (AINU) in Visakhapatnam has successfully performed the city's inaugural robotic Boari flap reconstruction. This specialized procedure was utilized to address a complex, long-segment ureteric stricture in a 50-year-old woman.
The patient, who had previously struggled with recurrent infections due to her condition, required immediate intervention. After initial stabilization and stone removal at AINU, the persistent stricture necessitated a reconstructive approach. The urology team opted for robotic surgery, a technically demanding technique involving a flap from the urinary bladder to repair the damaged ureter.
This minimally invasive robotic surgery, performed through small incisions, significantly reduced surgical trauma. It led to minimal blood loss, decreased postoperative pain, and facilitated a faster recovery. The successful reconstruction restored normal urinary flow and preserved the patient's kidney function. She was discharged within three days after the kidney tube was removed.
