Doctor's Suicide Highlights Workload Crisis
11 Oct
Summary
- First-year resident doctor found dead in hostel bathroom.
- Doctor had previously complained about heavy workload.
- NMC rules on work hours often ignored in hospitals.
A tragic incident unfolded at Sion Hospital where a first-year resident doctor, Dr Shivsharan Patil, was found deceased in his hostel bathroom on Saturday evening. The doctor, a native of Karnataka, had reportedly expressed concerns about his demanding workload prior to his death.
His roommate discovered his absence and alerted authorities after hearing his phone ringing inside the bathroom. While hospital officials noted that workload complaints had decreased recently, the National Medical Commission's regulations, which cap resident doctor workweeks at 48 hours, are often disregarded within hospital settings. Data indicates extreme hours are logged, and at least 25 resident doctors have died by suicide in recent years.
