18 Apr
Summary
- Twenty-nine cornea transplants were performed in one day, a record for Pakistan.
- The surgeries restored vision for five children, nine women, and fifteen men.
- The hospital relies on overseas donations but aims to foster local organ donation.

In a landmark achievement, ophthalmologists at Hayatabad Medical Complex successfully performed 29 cornea transplants in a single day, setting a new record for Pakistan. This initiative restored vision for 29 individuals, including five children under 15, nine women, and fifteen men.
The procedures were performed free of cost, with support from the Sehat Card Plus program and contributions from international organizations and donors. Corneas were sourced from the Murad Eye Bank, which has facilitated over 700 free transplants since its establishment in 2007.
While celebrating this milestone, hospital officials noted a dependence on overseas corneal donations. Efforts are underway to cultivate a culture of local organ donation to address the increasing demand for these life-changing procedures.
The hospital utilizes advanced surgical techniques, offering a near-zero chance of graft rejection and a lifetime of restored vision for patients suffering from conditions like Keratoconus, trauma, or injuries.
