16 Feb
Summary
- A viral video showed a rat in Amritsar pani puri water.
- The vendor removed the rodent before it escaped.
- Similar hygiene incidents occurred in Maharashtra and Ahmedabad.

Street food vendors across India, known for their delicious snacks like golgappa, are facing scrutiny over hygiene standards. Recently, a viral video from Amritsar captured a disturbing scene: a rat surfaced in the spiced water of a golgappa stall. The footage, shared by a content creator, showed the rodent in the water before the vendor removed it.
This incident is not isolated. In December 2025, a snake was discovered at a stall in Virar, Maharashtra. Earlier in 2025, an Ahmedabad food center was shut down and later sealed by officials following videos of insect contamination.
These events underscore the difficulties street food vendors face in maintaining hygiene, particularly in humid cities. Issues like open containers and lack of pest control contribute to such public health concerns, prompting calls for stricter adherence to FSSAI regulations.
