Man's Near-Death Heart Scare Linked to Rare Virus
7 Feb
Summary
- A rare Coxsackie virus strain caused a healthy man's cardiac arrest.
- He underwent an emergency procedure for a temporary pacemaker.
- Recovery involved overcoming severe physical and mental health struggles.

A man's flight to New York took a terrifying turn when he experienced a severe cardiac event, later identified as being caused by a rare strain of the Coxsackie virus.
He initially dismissed his symptoms as a nasty virus, but his condition worsened, leading to hospitalization. Doctors discovered his heart was under extreme strain, requiring an emergency transvenous pacemaker procedure to stabilize his heart rate.
Following stabilization and fitting of a permanent pacemaker, tests revealed the Coxsackie virus as the cause, a strain linked to hand, foot and mouth disease. This rare condition led to his near-death experience.
After nearly two weeks in the hospital and an additional week in a hotel, he returned home to begin a challenging recovery. The mental toll, including panic attacks and anxiety, proved more difficult than the physical recovery.
Nearly four years after the 2022 event, his pacemaker has been removed and he is monitored by an implantable loop recorder. He now focuses on gratitude for everyday moments, having been profoundly changed by his health scare.
