Meningitis Triggered Rare Disorder, Leaving Mum Unable to Walk
16 Feb
Summary
- Vicki Purdey lost the ability to walk after meningitis triggered a rare neurological disorder.
- She experienced flu-like symptoms that rapidly worsened over three days.
- FND has significantly impacted her mobility, requiring a wheelchair for outings.

Vicki Purdey, 37, initially mistook her severe flu-like symptoms for a common illness in March 2024. Her condition deteriorated rapidly, leading to her hospitalization where she was diagnosed with viral meningitis. Following discharge, she was readmitted with recurrent meningitis, by which time she had lost the ability to walk.
Doctors diagnosed Vicki with functional neurological disorder (FND), a condition triggered by the meningitis disrupting brain signals. This has left her with little sensation in her legs, making her virtually housebound and reliant on a wheelchair for any outings. Despite ongoing physiotherapy, she continues to battle brain fog and eye spasms.
Vicki now aims to raise awareness for FND, emphasizing the need for increased research and treatment options. She hopes her experience will help others recognize the symptoms of meningitis and FND, encouraging them to seek timely medical attention.
