Dog's Kidney Stones Treated with Rare Laser Surgery
12 Sep
Summary
- German Shepherd underwent rare laser surgery for kidney stones.
- Minimally invasive RIRS technique used, a veterinary first.
- Rover's kidney function drastically improved post-procedure.
A seven-year-old German Shepherd named Rover has returned home to Jabalpur after a remarkable veterinary intervention. Rover was suffering from chronic renal failure due to stones in his kidneys and urinary bladder.
His treatment involved Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery (RIRS), a highly specialized, minimally invasive technique not commonly used in veterinary medicine. This procedure allowed veterinarians to break down the stones into dust using a laser without major incisions.
Upon arrival, Rover's kidney function was severely compromised, with creatinine at 13.79 and urea at 123.9. After initial stabilization and supportive treatment, the RIRS procedure was performed.
Following the surgery and continued care, Rover's health showed dramatic improvement. His creatinine levels reduced to 2.0 and urea to 22.9, indicating restored kidney function. He was discharged on August 9th and has since returned to his family.
This case highlights the growing availability of advanced veterinary treatments. RIRS, while established in human medicine, demonstrates how specialized expertise and equipment can bring sophisticated, less invasive options to companion animals, reducing surgical trauma.
