Rare Heart Tumor Mimics Heart Attack, Saves Woman's Life
23 Mar
Summary
- A rare benign heart tumor, atrial myxoma, mimicked heart attack symptoms.
- Doctors initially diagnosed a heart attack but later found a heart tumor.
- Surgical removal of the one-inch tumor led to a full recovery.

A recent medical case highlights how atrial myxomas, rare benign heart tumors, can complicate diagnosis by mimicking cardiac emergencies like heart attacks. A 67-year-old woman experienced severe chest pain, leading doctors to suspect a heart attack. However, imaging revealed normal coronary arteries, prompting further investigation with an ultrasound.
The ultrasound detected a mobile, one-inch mass within the heart's left atrium, identified as an atrial myxoma. While not cancerous, these tumors are dangerous as they can obstruct blood flow or dislodge fragments, leading to strokes or embolisms.
